Period 6
We started with a challenging "Do Now" that combined dihybrid crosses, incomplete dominance, and codominance! Then we went over the weekend's homework problems to review incomplete dominance and codominance. You will have a quiz tomorrow on monohybrid and dihybrid crosses (complete dominance / "regular" problems), incomplete dominance, and codominance.

Period 7
We started with a challenging "Do Now" problem that combined dihybrid crosses and incomplete dominance. We went over the weekend's homework problems to review incomplete dominance and then I introduced codominance. Codominance was easy because the problems look the same as incomplete dominance, the phenotypes just show up differently (both traits show at the same time rather than blend together). You will have a quiz tomorrow on monohybrid and dihybrid crosses (complete dominance / "regular" problems), incomplete dominance, and codominance.

Hi everyone.... yes I lost track of this blog when I was sick last week. I'm back at it now so hopefully I'll be more consistent! I'm still learning about if this blogging thing is for me! (does anyone even read this anyway?? :)

Period 1
We worked on "A Day in the Life of a Bite of Pizza" as a review activity. If you were absent, you are still responsible for completing this activity, in written form, to be part of your quarter 3 grade. Please see me for more info.

We checked over the cat genetics packet (and I checked it off) and we did more dihybrid cross practice. I am moving on tomorrow so if you are not 100% confident with what we have done so far, you NEED to come see me!

We finished talking about digestive hormones and enzymes. Then we put it all together into the 3 phases of gastric secretion to finish up the digestive system.

I collected your Dietary Analysis (packet with calculations, answers to questions, and food journal if you had it still). Then we talked about how fats are digested in the body. Next, we got into recipe project groups to touch base and take a closer look at exemplar projects. Finally, we watched some more of Gunther's tour of the digestive system!

Period 5
I checked off the "I'm Starving" article questions that were assigned yesterday. Then we talked about the "How Eating Makes You Hungry" article that we read during class and discussed what makes a "good" vs. "bad" carbohydrate. I passed out a handout regarding Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load that will be a resource for your dietary analysis and recipe project. We discussed GI and GL to wrap up carbs. Then we had a few minutes to get into project groups and look a little more closely at the recipe projects. Finally, we used any remaining time to start talking about cholesterol.

Period 6

I passed out a vocabulary list and a genetics "how-to" guide - both of which will serve as our unit outline. We went over the 2 rules he came up with from his experiments and then the 2 Laws that eventually arose out of many genetics experiments over the years. Finally, we tried out a monohybrid cross genetics problem, testing what we remember from 7th grade!

Period 1
I checked off the "I'm Starving" article and then spent some time answering questions about the dietary analysis assignment. Next, we revisited GI and GL and talked about their implications as far as carbohydrate digestion and insulin release. Then, we moved on to cholesterol, revisiting the articles that were read when the sub was here last week (received hard copies) and going over "good" (HDL) vs. "bad" (LDL) cholesterol.

Period 2
We started with a Do Now looking at a fictional family named the Mendelsons. We looked at their traits and predicted traits of their children. This introduced genetics - our new unit! We tried out a monohybrid cross genetics problem, testing what we remember from 7th grade!

Period 5
We went over some fine details regarding completing the dietary analysis. Then, we talked about carbohydrates and read an article from the South Beach diet regarding digestion of carbs.

We started class with a "Do Now" by filling out a table showing the big picture concepts behind cellular respiration and photosynthesis (organelles, organisms, products, reactants, purpose of each). Then we compared and contrasted the processes. Finally, I showed the first part of a 2-day demo investigating how cellular respiration and photosynthesis are related to one another, using my own breath (CO2) and a photosynthetic plant.

Period 5
We went to A202 to work on analyzing our diets using Nutritiondata.com. I passed out the packet that goes along with the analysis and explained the assignment.

Read 2 articles on Cholesterol (“How cholesterol works” and “Cholesterol and triglycerides”) and complete questions. Students should complete these during class to be checked tomorrow.

Also, if students have not finished the Harvard Public Health webquest assigned last Friday, this should be finished for homework. It will also be checked tomorrow.

Periods 2, 6, 7 – Biology **Don't forget, your Ning project is due tomorrow!**

Complete double sided worksheet that says “Photosynthesis vs. Cellular Respiration” (or something close to that!) – one side has a large picture of a chloroplast and mitochondrion with arrows going between them and the other side is questions. Students should complete this worksheet during class and turn in.

Once finished, work on green Chapter 9 review sheet. The 75-point test is this Friday.

Period 5 – Honors Human Physiology **we will go to A202 tomorrow to analyze your food journal**

Complete same articles and questions on Cholesterol from period 1. It will be checked tomorrow.

We started class with a Do Now comparing photosynthesis to solar power. Then we went over the process of photosynthesis using a guided notes sheet (yellow handout). The rest of class was spent sitting in groups, deciding what should go on to the slide summarizing the video discussion from last week.
Homework: Finish up your PPT slide and Works Cited, upload to the "PowerPoint Upload" forum on your group page! The WHOLE GROUP project is due Thursday!

Period 5
Sara presented on obesity. Then, we finished the digestive anatomy handout by going over the table from Thursday. Finally, Ms. Sharkey spent some time introducing the recipe project which is due Tuesday April 6th!

We went over the endocrine system today using the PowerPoint that is uploaded to the class website. We spent a few minutes chatting in groups about our recipe project at the end of class.

We started class with a Do Now question, practicing filling out the "IN/OUT" table that summarizes cellular respiration. We finished going over the process of cellular respiration by completing the yellow table handout. We worked on some practice questions regarding ATP and cellular respiration.

Period 6
We finished the metabolism video and I identified the most important questions and allowed students to check their answers. Then, we started talking about cellular respiration by remembering some key pieces of the carbon cycle from last fall's ecology unit. We put the pieces that we knew into a chemical equation that you will have to know for quizzes and tests! We started working on going over the details of cellular respiration by filling out the yellow table handout. We got through the Kreb's Cycle.

I updated everyone on the Ning project thus far. We went over a time line and talked about upcoming assignments (video assignment coming this week, another day in the computer lab late next week to work on PowerPoint. Due date is TBA but will likely be the end of the week of 3/15). I also passed out a sheet outlining more detail regarding how the project will be graded.
Then, I talked about course selection for next year in anticipation of signing sheets during our next class.
Lastly, we had arts and crafts time while we made models of the ATP molecule!

Period 5:
Tory presented on fanconi anemia. We finished talking about blood by going over control of RBC formation by erythropoetin, an overview of white blood cells, and platelets/coagulation.

Hillary presented on anemia. I checked the "How the Blood Works" article questions. We finished the blood powerpoint, talking about red blood cell formation, white blood cells (overview), platelet formation and clot formation.

We went to the lab to work on our research for the ning project. By the end of class, each class member was assigned to post one link they found for their own research on "My Page"on the Ning, and one link they thought someone else in the group would find useful on the group page wall.

Period 6:
Today was a Ning introduction day. We all logged on and started playing with Ning! We will be in M105 on Thursday to continue our work.

I checked off page 644 #1-3. We finished the heartbeat powerpoint and started talking about blood (got as far as hemoglobin structure in the blood PPT).

We went to the media center lab to work on getting logged onto NING! Play around with NING this weekend to get a feel for the website. Keep in mind, this website is used for academic purposes only, so everything must be 100% school appropriate! I'm watching you.... :)

Period 7 started class with a quiz on the digestive system.
Periods 2, 6, and 7 all had classwork to complete: The section 9.1 "The Need for Energy" reading guide packet AND page 244 #1-5,7. Any work not completed in class was to be finished for homework and passed in NO LATER than Friday.

Period 5:
We finished talking about the heartbeat, using the PPT notes. We outlined the autorhythmic cells in the heart and talked about some problems with the heartbeat, including methods of fixing these problems.

Period 6:
We used a notes packet to go over the respiratory system. We talked about the anatomy of the system (tracing the path of air through the nose and down to the lungs) and the specific function of alveoli in gas exchange. We also discussed how the diaphragm acts as a muscle in the function of breathing.
Homework: read pages 971-974 and do #1,4 on page 974 AND respiratory system crossword puzzle

Last night's homework as checked. We talked about the heartbeat today - made our way through the slide on the Purkinje fibers on the heartbeat PowerPoint.

We finished the circulatory system by talking about blood, the kidneys, and the liver. We went over the respiratory system by filling out a new notes packet (anatomy, alveoli and gas exchange, and the function of the diaphragm in breathing).

Period 6:
We had a quick quiz on the cardiovascular system and talked about the excretory system (kidneys) and the liver. We watched the beginning of Body Story: Heart Attack!

Homework: same as last night

Period 2:
Class began with a quiz on the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. Ms. Sharkey made some announcements about making sure everyone has an e-mail address for a project that we will start after break. Use Yahoo, Gmail, or Hotmail if you don't have an e-mail or if your only e-mail is @townisp.com or @aim.com because these don't seem to work for the purposes of our project.

Period 5:
We finished Matters of the Heart and began talking about heartbeat (PowerPoint is posted on class website). We got through comparing and contrasting skeletal vs. cardiac muscle. Ms. Sharkey handed out a "How the Heart Works" article to help you with your reading and homework.
Homework: page 675 #8,10,11 (use last night's reading)

Periods 6 and 7:
Last night's homework as checked. We talked about the anatomy of the heart (front page of packet) and watched a short clip showing how blood flows through the heart. Ms. Sharkey showed a dissected pig heart to demonstrate the heart anatomy. We talked about arteries, veins, and capillaries, and summarized circulation by talking about how blood flows from the heart to the lungs, back to the heart, out to the body, and back to the heart again.
Homework: Circulatory system worksheet (side 1 - blood, side 2 - circulatory T/F *make false statements true please!)

Period 1:
Today we talked about valve deformities and valve replacements as well as the 3 types of circulation (finished the Heart PowerPoint). Coronary circulation lead us into starting to discuss heart disease. We started watching Body Story: Heart Attack
Homework: read pages 687-688 and 690-695 (about the heartbeat)

Period 2:
Day 2 - no class! Quiz tomorrow!

Period 5:
We finished the Body Story: Heart Attack video and discussed. We started the Matters of the Heart animations as a class, looking at some causes and effects of heart disease. We will finish these tomorrow.
Homework: same as period 1

Periods 6 and 7:
We took the quiz on the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems and started talking about the cardiovascular system. We went over the major functions and major parts of the system, using a new notes packet.
Homework: read pages 975-984, do #1,2,4 on page 984

Today is Go Red for Women Day! Report cards were also distributed during homeroom.

Period 1:
Today was a day 1 - no class! Next week's PowerPoint on heartbeat is posted on the class website.

Periods 2, 6, 7:
I checked pages 8 and 9 in the nervous system packet. We finished the nervous system by talking about the myelin sheath, the synapse, and reflexes.
Homework: Quiz Monday (P6 & 7)/Tuesday (P2) on skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems! 45 points!

Period 5:
We talked about the 3 types of circulation and watched a video on heart attack, which is a disruption of coronary circulation.
Homework: see assignment from 2/4

Periods 1 and 5:
We finished the heart dissections!
Homework for period 5: read "Mending Broken Hearts" and write a letter to your patient about heart disease based on the writing prompt

Period 2 and 6:
Page 909 #1-5 was checked and we finished up the muscular system by going over the homework. We started the nervous system by watching a short video about Mirror Neurons and we got a new packet on the nervous system. We talked about functions of the system, divisions of the system (CNS/PNS), and the structure of a neuron.
Homework: pages 8 and 9 in your anatomy HW packet

Period 7:
Today was a day 7 - no class!

Periods 1 and 5:
Today was day 1 of the pig heart dissections! Tomorrow we will finish the dissection during class.

Homework: continue reviewing heart anatomy and blood flow

Period 2:
We finished talking about the muscular system by going over the 3 types of muscle, ways of categorizing muscle, functions of muscle, and the process of muscle contraction (sliding filament theory). Page 10 of the anatomy packet was checked from Monday's homework assignment.

Homework: read pages 905-909 and do #1-5 on page 909

Period 7:
The homework from Monday was checked (page 909) and we started the nervous system. We talked about the functions of the system, divisions of the system, and started talking about neuron structure (all in the nervous system packet).

Homework: pages 8 and 9 in the anatomy packet on the nervous system

Period 6: Today was a day 6 - no class!
